Meet a Mechanic: Rudy Ramnarain, Mechanic-Technician, Bus Maintenance

Posted by Drew Kerr | Feb. 24, 2026

Mechanic Technician Rudy at Heywood Garage

To provide clean, safe, and reliable service, we have hundreds of technicians working behind the scenes on our buses, trains, rail systems and facilities. In our Meet a Mechanic series, we introduce you to those who are committed to their craft and hear why they enjoy what they do. Want to be a part of the team that keeps the metro moving? We’re hiring!

Tell us a little bit about your background?

When I was young, my family moved from Guyana to the United States. I watched my father and uncles work on cars, so I followed their lead, studied automotive technology, and spent about a decade working at dealerships and an electric vehicle company, where I learned about electric motors, batteries, and high-voltage systems.

What brought you to Metro Transit?

A customer who turned out to be a Metro Transit mechanic, told me how much he enjoyed his job, encouraged me to apply, and even said he’d be a reference. I thought, ‘That sounds like the job I’ve been looking for.’ I started here in December 2024.

What do you enjoy most about working here?

I took a bit of a pay cut coming here, but the quality of life is so much better. Working at a dealership, you’re under constant pressure and rushing cars out the door instead of focusing on quality. Here, I don’t get burned out, so when I get home, I can enjoy spending time with my kids and my wife.  It’s a good balance. Money comes and goes, but at the end of the day, family is what really matters.

What’s next for you?

I’ve learned a lot since coming here and love being challenged. I’m excited about working on electric buses. I think this is the last job I’ll ever have. To me, this really feels like the American Dream.
