Behind the Badge: Officer Charlie Jacka

Please tell us a little bit about your journey to working at the Metro Transit Police Department.

I wanted to get into law enforcement for a long time. Right out of high school, I started at Hamline University, studying criminal justice. After I finished at Hamline, I got my POST license and did my skills courses at Hennepin Tech. While I was at Hamline, I worked at MTPD as a Community Service Officer (CSO). I started as a CSO in 2022 and was in that role for a little over three years. I’ve been a sworn officer for about eight months now.

What do you like about being an officer with MTPD?

What I like most is the wide variety of people that you see every day. In this job, you’re not getting the same types of calls all the time. We get a wide variety of calls and people. We interact with people who use transit every day and people that use it to go to Vikings games once a year.

Where would you like to see your career go from here?

That's a good question. I would like to experience what being a cop for Metro Transit really is over the next few years and kind of grow based on what I learn from partners and supervisors. I want to see what’s going to be the best fit for me, so I can benefit both the department and myself.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I like to watch sports, mostly football or hockey, but some baseball, too. And I love to get outdoors, both camping and other outdoor activities. I’ve mostly camped in the state, but I have plans for an out-of-state camping trip coming up soon. I’m looking forward to that. I also enjoy just spending time with family and friends.
