Unlike other buses, even some hybrids, the Xcelsior uses super efficient All Electric components, many that eliminate power-sucking hydraulic systems. Instead, it uses an all Electric HVAC system, electric power steering rather than hydraulic and an electric air compressor to power pneumatic accessories like doors and airbrakes. Built by New Flyer in St. Cloud, the Xcelsior has many Minnesota companies involved in making it!
New Flyer is one of the largest bus manufacturers in North America, supplying vehicles to transit systems all over the U.S. and Canada. New Flyer employs 850 people at its manufacturing facilities in Crookston and St. Cloud.
Thermo King, a global leader in transport temperature controls based in the Twin Cities, manufactured the TriPac idle reduction and temperature management system. Thermo King employs 500 people at its Bloomington facility.
BAE Systems manufactured the HybriDrive propulsion system. BAE employs 600 at its plant in Fridley.
Cummins manufactured this diesel engine, and also makes related fuel system, air handling and filtration technologies. It employs 1,800 at its 3 plants in Minnesota.
