New transit services arrive Saturday, Dec. 6

On Dec. 6, Route 6 will be discontinued.

In its place, NEW Route 36 and the NEW METRO E Line will provide improved service.

Where will these new routes travel? 

  • Route 36 will travel between 78th & Johnson and Uptown Transit Station via Xerxes Ave. every 30 minutes.
  • METRO E Line will travel from Westgate Station to Southdale Transit Center every 10 – 12 minutes, seven days a week during the day and most of the evening.

These new routes will provide more destination options, will travel faster than the current Route 6 by stopping less often, allowing customers to board faster, and stopping at fewer red lights.

How do the routes differ?

Route 36 provides more frequent stops along Hennepin and Xerxes avenues.

Serves many stops between 78th and Johnson and Uptown Transit Station:

  • Uptown and Hennepin Ave. shopping district
  • 44th & France shopping district
  • 50th & France shopping district
  • Southdale Transit Center

E Line will be faster and have fewer stops along University Ave., 4th St., Hennepin and France avenues.

Directly serves the University of Minnesota, Huntington Bank Stadium, Dinkytown, NE Minneapolis and downtown Minneapolis.

Serves limited stops between Gateway Station near Prospect Park and Southdale Transit Station:

  • Prospect Park area via University Ave.
  • University of Minnesota via Huntington Bank Stadium 
  • on University Ave. and the Rec Center on 4th St.
  • Dinkytown on 4th St.
  • NE Minneapolis along 4th St. and 1st Ave.
  • Downtown Minneapolis along Hennepin Ave.
  • Uptown and Hennepin Ave. shopping districts
  • 44th & France shopping district
  • 50th & France shopping district
  • Southdale Transit Center
Where do these buses pick you up? Some stops may just have a sign while higher ridership stops may also have a shelter. E Line stations are sheltered from the weather and feature heating and added lighting, NexTrip real-time signs, benches, ticket machines, Go-To Card readers, security cameras, emergency phones, and trash bins.
Frequency of service Every 30 minutes.

Daily service every 10–12 minutes from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Early morning/late evening: 15-30 minutes

When to pay? Pay when you get on the bus. Fare: $2 at any time for 2½ hours of rides. Pay for your fare at the station BEFORE getting on the E Line. Fare: $2 at any time for 2½ hours of rides.
How can I pay for my ride?

Cash: Drop your money in the farebox next to the driver. Fareboxes accept dollar bills, coins or tokens, but change is not available.

Go-To Card: Touch your card/pass to the circle on the card reader as you get on the bus. 

App: Activate a ticket from the Metro Transit app to pay your fare. Download the app at metrotransit.org/app.

Buying a ticket: Ticket machines are located at each station platform. To buy a ticket:

  1. Push Start to wake up the machine
  2. Push Start again to begin your transaction 
  3. Select Buy a ticket/Use voucher
  4. Select your fare type
  5. Select Quantity
  6. Add to cart
  7. Select + ADD MORE to add more tickets
  8. Select Check Out or Add another ticket
  9. Select Pay with cash, credit card, or coupon
  10. Make payment
    • Cash – Exact change only
    • Credit Card – Fully insert card, hold, remove when prompted
    • Coupon – Good for one ticket purchase only
