100 new hybrid-electric buses scheduled to enter service in 2027
Metro Transit has won a $35 million Low- or No-Emission Grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to help acquire 100 new 40-foot hybrid-electric buses. The new Gillig-made buses are scheduled to join Metro Transit’s fleet in 2027, supporting expanded service on regular routes and bus rapid transit lines.
FTA’s Low-or No-Emission Grant program is a competitive, discretionary grant program that helps state and local governments purchase transit buses and related infrastructure. Metro Transit’s grant is part of a $2 billion national investment in transit infrastructure, supporting 165 projects delivering 2,400 buses built with American parts and labor.
Metro Transit thanks FTA Administrator Marc Molinaro and U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy for their partnership in making this investment possible.
“A modern, sustainable fleet is fundamental to carrying out our mission of connecting people, strengthening communities and improving lives,” Metro Transit General Manager Lesley Kandaras said. “We appreciate this investment in our system, which will bring benefits across Twin Cities region.”
Guided by a Zero-Emission Bus Transition Plan, Metro Transit continues to modernize its fleet and adopt emerging bus technologies. The agency currently operates an in-service fleet of more than 600 buses.
Replacing aging vehicles, more than 250 new buses are entering service in 2025 and 2026, including the agency’s first 40-foot battery-electric buses. Hybrid buses rely in part on battery power, reducing tailpipe emissions.
Metro Transit is an operating division of the Metropolitan Council, which is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as outlined in its Climate Action Work Plan. The plan unifies efforts across Met Council divisions and aligns with Minnesota’s Climate Action Framework.
Across Minnesota, buses of all types contribute 2% of transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions.
Metro Transit continues to hire and train technicians to support its fleet of buses and trains. Job seekers are encouraged to visit Metro Transit’s website for more information about career opportunities.
