Family outings are easier in August with Metro Transit "Ride Out the Summer" program

With only weeks left before millions of students return to Twin Cities Metro Area schools, Metro Transit is encouraging families to take advantage of weekend outings by offering children ages 12 and under free rides on buses, light rail trains and the Northstar Commuter Rail.

The “Ride Out the Summer” program allows up to three children (12 and under) to ride free with each paid fare on Saturdays and Sundays in August on all Metro Transit and Minnesota Valley Transit Authority routes, with the exception of special State Fair express routes.

“There are so many fantastic summer family outings in our region,” said Metro Transit General Manager Brian Lamb. “We know we can add to the experience by giving our riders a worry-free lift to all the Twin Cities region has to offer.”

Among the dozens of August events that Metro Transit and MVTA will bring riders to are the Minnesota Lynx, Minnesota Twins and St. Paul Saints games, the Japanese Lantern Lighting Festival, the St. Paul Farmer’s Market, Music and Movies in the Park events and exhibits at the Science Museum of Minnesota and the Minnesota History Center. Even weekend trips to visit relatives can be made easier and more memorable by using any of the trains or more than 100 Metro Transit and MVTA bus routes.

Thousands of Twin Cities residents and visitors already take advantage of transit services on weekends. Riders can plan their trip by using the online tools at or by calling a friendly transit expert at 612-373-3333.
