Ongoing Bus Stop Improvements
Metro Transit is committed to providing customers a safe, secure and comfortable experience at the bus stop. We strive to conveniently locate bus stops that fit well within the surrounding neighborhood and make them inviting places with good pedestrian accessibility. Metro Transit is working to improve the customer experience at the bus stop through:
- • Better bus stop signage
- • Concrete pads at the front of the bus stop to make it easier to get on and off the bus
- • Reacting to changes in customer boardings and transit service changes and installing shelters at new locations
- • Improving existing shelters with light or radiant heat
- • Shelter cleaning, maintenance frequencies and techniques
- • Snow removal activities at bus stops with customer waiting shelters
- • Pedestrian access improvements
As part of its commitment to service excellence and innovation, Metro Transit has been exploring opportunities to improve the information available to its customers at bus stops. In 2015, Metro Transit began a program of replacing signs at its bus stops with enhanced information that includes route numbers, a unique Stop Number and instructions on accessing NexTrip real-time information for that stop. Metro Transit expects to complete installation of improved transit information at every bus stop in the region by early 2017.

Customer Waiting Shelters
Customer waiting shelters are covered areas for transit customers intended to create a more comfortable waiting environment by providing protection from wind, rain, snow, and sun. Most of the waiting shelters in the region are owned and maintained by Metro Transit. Some shelters are privately owned and belong to cities, Suburban Transit Association (STA) providers, private businesses or developments. Not every bus stop has a customer waiting shelter. Installing and maintaining these shelters are resource intensive. Metro Transit must prioritize where shelters are located to ensure efficient use of the limited resources dedicated to transit shelter placement and ongoing maintenance.

Transit Shelter Lighting
In early 2015, Metro Transit committed to providing lighting at all new bus shelter installations, where possible. In many cases, Metro Transit is able to coordinate with regulatory agencies to use existing street lighting as an electrical source for shelter lighting. LED fixtures with low operating costs are often installed in shelters. Solar-powered lighting may be an attractive option at some shelter locations. In some cases, lighting is afforded via street lighting or through an agreement with an adjacent property owner.
Solar Bus Shelter Program
Metro Transit began installing solar bus shelters around the Twin Cities in 2012, and has installed more than 40 of these shelters to date. A solar panel and light with a motion sensor is installed, and the energy from the solar panels is stored in a battery pack and used to light the shelter at night. The light can stay on for a total of 30 hours without any recharge from the solar panel. This is ideal for keeping shelters lit during continuously cloudy weather and winter.
These systems are installed in shelters where customer boardings or security concerns create a desire for a light, but the cost to bring power into the shelter from the utility company is prohibitive. Metro Transit is also exploring options to mount solar panels on the roofs of bus shelters to create a more compact, cost-effective solution, especially for areas with limited space. In the next few years, Metro Transit will be improving up to 300 bus stop locations with new shelters. Many of these will be in urban areas where existing development makes access to electrical service difficult. Solar is a viable and economical option.
