Downtown Minneapolis construction

There's significant street construction happening in downtown Minneapolis in 2019, leading to bus detours and more buses on 6th Street and Nicollet Mall.

Help keep buses on schedule during construction. Follow these tips:

Have your fare ready when the bus pulls up.

For fastest payment, download and pay with the Metro Transit mobile app.

Instead of paying in cash, pay with a Go-To Card or pass.

If possible, exit the bus through the back door to allow customers to board through the front door.

Be safe; don’t chase buses. They need to stay on schedule by leaving the stop on time. (Remember to arrive at your stop five minutes before departure time.)

8th Street

The 8th Street Reconstruction is currently underway and is anticipated to be completed at the end of 2019.

Routes 5, 9, 19, 22, 39 and 755 now stop on 6th Street.

Planned improvements include:

  • Condition of the infrastructure for pedestrians, transit and vehicles
  • Provide cross walks with pedestrian curb ramps, durable crosswalk markings, wider sidewalks, count-down timers, landscaping and lighting
  • Implementation of enhanced transit amenities at select locations, including larger waiting areas for transit stops

Hennepin Avenue

The City of Minneapolis is rebuilding the Hennepin Avenue corridor between Washington Avenue and 12th Street.

Routes 4, 6, 12, 61 and 141 will move to Nicollet Mall beginning April 15, 2019.

The reconstruction will begin with improvements to the utility works infrastructure in early 2019 and continue for four years – into 2022.

The planned improvements include:

  • Space for enhanced transit stops for future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service
  • Sidewalk areas that support pedestrian activities
  • Space for plant and street furniture
  • One-way bikeways behind the curb
  • Resurfacing the existing four vehicle lanes, with Hennepin Avenue remaining a two-way street
