We hear and learn from our actual customers as they answer our "10 Questions with Metro Transit!" Today we meet Catherine!
How long have you been riding the bus or train?
It may not have been my first trip, but I have a memory of riding with my grandma to the Downtown Target shortly after it first opened, 2001, I think. I was so excited to see a two-story Target with a cart escalator!
How often do you ride?
A few days a week
Favorite route(s)?
Currently the A Line because of its frequency and the 74 because it's a one seat ride to the Downtown St. Paul Farmers Market.
Why do you ride transit?
So many reasons! Primarily for the environmental benefits. Secondly, to reduce stress - I own a car, but I dislike driving and finding parking. I also don't like feeling tied to where I parked my car - transit can provide more freedom than driving at times. It can also feel safer: I especially enjoy taking transit in rainy or snowy weather as I don't have to be stressed about road conditions.
What you wish “first-timers” knew?
Transit is really fun with friends! If you are intimidated, overwhelmed, or anxious about trying transit, see if you can connect with a friend to try it together. Choose a fun destination that isn't time constrained, so it doesn't matter what time you arrive and enjoy the ride.
Favorite destination?
Downtown St. Paul Farmers Market
What do we (Metro Transit) get right?
Engaging with riders on how the system works and how it could be improved. Riders have a wealth of knowledge and ideas to share, and it has been great to see all the outreach in the last few years. I also really appreciate NexTrip displays and the option to text NexTrip. It's much easier to wait when you know when to expect the next bus or train.
What can we do to improve?
One of my favorite things to do riding transit is watch the world go by, but that's harder to do when the windows are covered by ads. Even with the perforations, it can be difficult to see out and in (important when determining where to board the train with a bike, or whether you have to move aside to let passengers out the front door of a bus). I'd love to see all windows on buses and trains remain unobscured.
Favorite onboard memory?
There have been many times where I've witnessed riders helping each other out, either by providing information, picking up dropped items, signaling a stop when someone was unable to, etc. These interactions warm my heart and make me glad to be part of the community in a special way when I take transit.
Favorite movie about transit?
