The map above illustrates the anticipated year in which stations will be constructed and shows stations that have already been completed. It also identifies METRO G Line stations that are being built in coordination with projects led by other agencies. This map will be updated as more specific information is available,

Construction of the METRO G Line bus rapid transit (BRT) project is scheduled to begin in fall 2026. The G Line will replace Route 62 and 68 with fast, frequent, and all-day service.

What to expect from construction

G Line construction activities also include installation of fiber optic communication infrastructure and construction of additional pedestrian, traffic signal, and intersection improvements. Bikeway improvements are also included at some stations that are part of coordinated projects led by partner agencies.

  • Work in the corridor includes station construction, utility work, pavement and intersection improvements, and traffic signal changes

  • Expect temporary lane restrictions and marked detours for traffic

  • Pedestrian access will remain for businesses and residences

  • Buses routes will be detoured during construction. Up-to-date information about bus detours and temporary stop locations can be found at metrotransit.org/alerts and by subscription to Rider Alerts

  • Full lane closures will occur for up to 21 days at certain stations. Only one direction of traffic will be closed at a time, with additional lane restrictions for longer time periods

Coordinated Projects

To minimize impacts on residents and businesses, Metro Transit is working with Ramsey County, MnDOT, and the City of St. Paul to construct G Line stations in coordination with their projects. Ramsey County – Rice Street Reconstruction (2025-2027 construction)

Ramsey County and City of St. Paul - Capitol Rice Street Reconstruction (2027 construction)

G Line Phased Opening

Metro Transit plans to open the G Line in two phases, to coordinate with other planned street projects in the corridor.

  • Phase 1 will serve the northern portion of the route, from Little Canada Transit Station to downtown St. Paul (Robert & Kellogg). Construction is planned between 2026 and 2027, and service will begin on this segment once work is complete. Several G Line stations will be constructed in coordination with Ramsey County projects on Rice Street.

  • Phase 2 will extend service south from Robert & Kellogg to the Dakota County Northern Service Center. Construction is planned through 2028, after which the full G Line will operate from Little Canada to West St. Paul. Several G Line stations will be constructed in coordination with a MnDOT project on Robert Street.

This phased approach allows Metro Transit and partner agencies to complete multiple corridor improvements at the same time, which helps to reduce construction impacts.

  • Fall 2026: Construction starts on stations

  • Late 2027: Anticipated opening phase 1 of the G Line

  • Late 2028: Anticipated opening phase 2 of the G Line
