Signal your intent!
Phase 2 contains a complete upgrade of the train signal equipment. Light rail trains are controlled by a complex system of signals. The original signal equipment is over 20 years old and is at the end of useful life.
What’s changing?
- A brand-new signal system for improved reliability.
- Enhanced ‘reverse running’ capability—keeping trains moving even in unusual situations like stalled trains or emergency track repairs.
- Smarter routing to keep schedules on track.
Most of the work will happen behind the scenes, inside signal houses along the tracks from Franklin Station to 42nd St. You may not always see the construction, but trust us—big improvements are in motion!
The work completed in Phase 2 will result in a new signal system and track configuration which will allow for more options to route trains efficiently, resulting in improved schedule reliability. A big win for us all!
