How We Roll: Eric Laska, Commuter Programs Specialist

How We Roll celebrates Metro Transit employees who regularly ride transit and use other forms of sustainable transportation. Read more How We Roll Q&As.

How do you generally get around?

If I can, I bike! Luckily, our home is centrally located near the State Fairgrounds, and the metro area is very bike friendly. Getting to the office, Metro Transit worksites or client sites is fairly easy. When I hang my bike up for winter, I typically take Route 61 to the Heywood Office. I do have three young children, so I use our minivan to shuffle people around, but I’m always envious of my colleagues who cart their smiling kids around in cargo bikes.

What do you enjoy most about taking transit and biking?

Biking makes me happy. It’s really that simple. I don’t have to contend with the stress of traffic and I get a dopamine boost. If I’m frustrated, I can pound the pedals or, alternatively, slow up and take in the sights, sounds, and fresh air. Yes, my bike commutes generally take longer than a car trip, but I am often in a much better mood and feel ready to take on life’s challenges.

What advice do you have for people who are unsure about taking transit or biking?

Call or email me...seriously! It’s directly related to my job as a Commuter Programs Specialist. We promote fewer single-occupancy vehicle trips by encouraging more sustainable modes of transportation...including transit and biking. I’m happy to help plan a route or ride alongside if that helps.
