MINNEAPOLIS – (Nov. 29) – Metro Transit selected St. Louis Park’s Nadine Babu as its three billionth customer and awarded her a year of rides on its buses and trains during a ceremony this morning.
Metro Transit invited customers to submit entries in a contest. A bus and Hiawatha light-rail rider and business owner, Babu wrote the best entry according to judges, and was awarded a year’s worth of free rides. Her submission reads, “I ride the bus for so many reasons – it’s safe, reliable, inexpensive, convenient, and you can text, e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, etc. and ride without any consequences… You have a customer for life in me!”
Speaking at the Uptown Transit Center in Minneapolis, Metro Transit General Manager Brian Lamb presented Babu with the award. Lamb also recognized and thanked current and past customers and employees of the public transit agency for achieving the milestone.
“On behalf of all of Metro Transit employees past and present I’d like to offer a resounding thank you to Nadine and all of our customers for riding with us over the past four decades,” said Lamb. Bus and light-rail operators as well as a bus maintenance manager who has worked at the agency for more than four decades joined Lamb for the presentation.
In 1972, the foundation of the current Twin Cities public transportation system was in place. By 1984 the agency had provided one billion customer trips and achieved the two billion mark in 1999. As of November 2012, customers have boarded Metro Transit buses and trains more than three billion times.
Metro Transit is a service of the Metropolitan Council. Customers boarded Metro Transit buses and trains 81 million times last year.
