9. Are there any special safety considerations for trains?

Trains are a great addition to the Twin Cities. But like any moving vehicle, they come with warnings. Please read this section carefully so you stay safe near the tracks.

Hiawatha Light Rail
Trains travel in both directions on the tracks. Unlike freight trains, they are extremely fast and quiet. Carefully look both ways when crossing tracks, and cross at marked areas only. Walk bikes across the tracks to avoid getting tires stuck in the tracks.

Trains may travel right behind each other. A sign will indicate when a second train is approaching, but you should still look both ways before crossing. Trains are operated by high-powered overhead electrical wires, so be sure to stay clear of the wires and tracks.

Northstar Commuter Rail
Northstar trains share tracks with freight trains, which do not slow down at rail stations. Remember to stand well back from the yellow line on the platform until the Northstar train comes to a complete stop. Cross tracks only in designated areas, looking both ways before crossing.
