3. How do I pay my fare?

As you get on the bus, drop your money in the farebox next to the driver. Fareboxes accept dollar bills, coins or tokens, but change is not available. SuperSaver Stored Value Cards and 31-Day Passes also may be used to pay your fare. Insert them (arrow pointing down) into the reader next to the farebox.

If you have a Go-To Card, Metropass, U-Pass or Go-To College Pass, touch it to the Go-To circle on the blue card reader as you board.

You can use a SuperSaver 31-Day Pass on a train as long as it has been activated on a bus. If your trip begins on a bus, you can use a Stored Value Card; however, to transfer to light rail, you must ask the bus driver for a rail-only transfer. SuperSaver 31-Day Passes and Stored Value Cards cannot be used on Northstar.

On most buses, you pay when you get on. However, on many express buses leaving downtown during afternoon rush hours, you pay as you leave.

The same fares are charged for buses and light rail and vary by time of day and type of service. Northstar weekday fares differ from weekend fares. For a single ride, use cash or credit card to buy a ticket at the machine on the station platforms. You must buy your ticket BEFORE boarding the train. (You cannot buy tickets onboard.)

If you have a Go-To Card, Metropass, U-Pass or Go-To College Pass, be sure to validate it on the card reader (located next to the ticket machine).

You can use a SuperSaver 31-Day Pass to ride light rail, as long as it has been activated on a bus. If your trip begins on a bus, you can use a Stored Value Card; however, to transfer to light rail, you must ask the bus driver for a rail-only transfer. SuperSaver 31-Day Passes and Stored Value Cards cannot be used on Northstar.

Police officers or train crew members will randomly walk the trains and station platforms asking for proof of payment. Please show your ticket or valid transit pass on request. There is a $180 fine if you ride the train without paying.
