July 2008Thanks for supporting the Commuter ChallengeCompanies across the Twin Cities stepped up and encouraged their employees to take the Commuter Challenge, which ended June 30. This year, nearly 15,000 commuters took the Challenge, which encouraged smarter ways of getting to work. Over three months, more than 300 employers participated in the campaign, and 125 on-site events were hosted. Commuters who usually drive alone to work could pledge – for as little as one day – to take the bus or train, carpool, vanpool, bike or walk. Current transit users could pledge to make a bigger commitment and ride more often. Those who pledged by June 30 were entered in a prize drawing for a laptop computer, iPods, bikes and gift certificates. Winners will be posted at metrotransit.org later this month. “We saw great participation from companies this year,” said Rachel Dungca, market development specialist at Metro Transit. “We appreciate all that organizations do to help relieve traffic congestion and improve the region’s air quality.” See a list of participating companies. New for the Commuter Challenge this year was the team competition, where groups of up to 10 participants competed against other teams for prizes. Teams from The Nature Conservancy received awards for the most trips taken and the most miles traveled using alternatives to driving solo. Read more. The Commuter Challenge is presented by Metro Transit and the region’s Transportation Management Organizations (TMOs): 494 Commuter Services, Anoka County TMO, Downtown Minneapolis TMO and St. Paul Smart Trips. |
