The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will fully fund the federal share of the METRO Orange Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, improving service on a 17-mile stretch of the region’s busiest express bus corridor.
The FTA's announcement means the $150.7 million project has secured all funding and can move into the final stage of construction. Some Orange Line features, including a new station at Lake Street, are already being built as part of a larger reconstruction of I-35W. Full funding will allow for the construction of additional stations and bus purchases. Service is scheduled to begin in 2021.
The Orange Line will connect Minneapolis, Richfield, Bloomington and Burnsville, providing frequent, all-day service on the I-35W corridor. The Orange Line will replace the existing local Route 535, offering speedier trips, all-day, station-to-station service and enhanced stations.
