Commuter Challenge participants step up and deliver!

This year’s Commuter Challenge participants stepped up and pledged to drive alone less often – some even delivered more than originally planned!

That’s according to results from an online survey of 2,000 participants in the Commuter Challenge, a three-month campaign that encourages people to leave their cars at home more often.

Nearly 94 percent of those surveyed said that they fulfilled their pledges and more than half of that group exceeded their original pledge goal to drive alone less often – and take the bus or train, carpool, vanpool, bike or walk to work or school.

Since this year’s Commuter Challenge, 14 percent of those surveyed said that they continued to use alternatives to driving alone to work every day, up from 11 percent in a survey conducted after last year’s Commuter Challenge. Another 14 percent this year said they now take alternatives one additional day a week, 26 percent take alternatives two to four days a week and 34 percent said they take alternatives on occasion.

Forty-five percent also indicated that they would be very likely to use alternative commuting options if their employers would offer workers benefits like Metropass or preferred carpool parking.

The survey was conducted in early July. Survey participants were picked based on being identified as commuters who previously drove alone to work.

The Commuter Challenge was held April through June. This year, than 12,690 commuters pledged to drive alone less often.
