The Commuter Challenge:
A good tool for a green company
Compellent Technologies, Inc. of Eden Prairie has a green product and is headquartered in a green building, which was certified LEED gold by the U.S. Green Building Council.
How can the company help more of its employees embrace commuting options that are green as well? By entering the Commuter Challenge, an annual campaign that encourages commuters to try alternatives to driving alone to work.
With assistance from 494 Commuter Services, the company, which provides computer network storage systems that are energy efficient, held a commuter fair in April and highlighted the Commuter Challenge. This was the first time the company has been involved in the Challenge, said Human Resources Director Brian Holsten.
Among its commuter benefits, Compellent provides employees bike racks, a locker room with showers and preferred parking for workers who drive fuel-efficient vehicles.
To help get more employees interested in the Commuter Challenge, the company is offering a generous incentive – a $100 gift card – to each employee who commits to the team competition.
“I wanted the company to get involved with the Commuter Challenge because as we add staff to our corporate office, we need to get our employees informed about commuting options,” Holsten said. “We already have employees who are carpooling and biking to work, so for some the Commuter Challenge was a logical step to take on.”
The company expects to have two teams competing, he said.
