Van-GO! helps employees share their commute

Vanpoolers like those from Boston Scientific Cardiac Rhythm Management know that by sharing their commute, they can ease congestion, lower fuel and insurance costs and wear and tear on their cars.

Metro Transit began working with Boston Scientific – then Guidant Corporation – when the company was experiencing a shortage of employee parking on its campus in Arden Hills. One option presented to help the company was the Van-GO! program, sponsored by the Metropolitan Council.

Van-GO! routes cannot be duplicated by any regular bus route or light-rail service. Since Boston Scientific has limited bus service near its campus, the program was a good fit.

The company began promoting and subsidizing vanpooling in May 2004. Today, 13 vanpools – 12 of which are Van-GO! vans – arrive at the facility each day, with 80 employees participating.

Vanpooling has been beneficial to the company, too. By one estimate, vanpoolers free up 70 parking spaces on the Boston Scientific campus.

In addition to providing a financial benefit to employees who vanpool, Boston Scientific has preferential parking for employees who pool to work. The company also promotes carpooling, biking and walking to work.
